Event: Valentino exhibition at Somerset House
Location: Somerset House, WC2
Valentino: Master of Couture is a major retrospective showing 50 years of haute couture of the Italian designer Valentino Garavani, including designs worn by Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly, Sofia Loren, Julia Roberts and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Somerset House’s Embankment galleries will be turned into a glittering catwalk, with 130 Valentino designs on display, with dresses from the couture catwalk and red carpet as well as one-off commissions.
They include wedding dresses worn by Jackie Kennedy Onassis from Valentino’s 1968 White Collection and the pearl-encrusted ivory silk gown sewn with 10 different types of lace worn by Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece in 1995.
The exhibition is designed so that visitors experience the model’s view, walking the 60-metre catwalk, while viewing the fashionably-attired ‘audience’, all wearing Valentino gowns, dresses, trouser suits, minis, capes and kaftans.
Films showing behind the scenes work at the atelier and a collection of photographs and other memorabilia associated with the designer are also on display.
Other fashion exhibitions on in London this autumn/winter include Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 until 6 January at the V&A Museum (which has also recently reopened its Fashion Galleries after a redesign), and Hartnell to Amies: Couture by Royal Appointment at the Fashion & Textile Museum until 23 February.
