Event: Sleeping Beauty Ballet at Sadler’s Wells
Location: Sadler's Wells Ballet, EC1
Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty is an adaption of the Tchaikovsky ballet with a modern day setting, produced as part of the 25th anniversary of Bourne’s company.
The ballet is described as a ‘gothic romance’, in which the princess Aurora’s christening takes place in 1890 – the year of the ballet’s premiere – goes to sleep in 1911 and awakes in 2011, and she does not fall in love at first sight.
The three distinct time periods will be in great contrast to traditional productions of the ballet, where differences between the three scenes are often hardly noticeable.
This is the third in Bourne’s Tchaikovsky trilogy, which have seen an all-male production of Swan Lake and the Nutcracker set in a Victorian orphanage.
Sadler’s Wells is also putting on The Snowman at the Peacock Theatre in Holborn, WC2, performed by the Birmingham Repertory Theatre over the Christmas period.
