Event: Quartermaine’s Terms by Simon Gray

Location: Wyndham's Theatre, WC2

Rowan Atkinson is appearing in his first stage role in nearly 25 years, playing the title role in Simon Gray’s Quartermaine’s Terms at the Wyndham Theatre in the West End from 23 Jan. Atkinson is best known for his roles in Blackadder and Mr Bean.

The play is set in the 1960s in an English language school in Cambridge where Atkinson plays a well-meaning but incompetent teacher. The story follows the lives of a group of English language teachers over several years, and is both tragic and comic.

Playwright Simon Gray won the Cheltenham Prize for Literature in 1982 for Quartermaine’s Terms. Richard Eyre, who ran the National Theatre for a decade and has also worked in film and opera, directs this production. His work includes director of the film Notes on a Scandal, the television series The Hollow Crown and the operas La Traviata at Covent Garden and Carmen at the Met in New York.
