Event: Murillo at Dulwich Picture Gallery and the Wallace Collection
Location: Dulwich Picture Gallery, SE21 & Wallace Collection, W1
Dulwich Picture Gallery is being transformed to resemble a Sevillian church for the exhibition Murillo & Justino de Neve: the Art of Friendship. The exhibition brings together the later paintings of the 17th century Spanish baroque painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo that were commissioned by his friend and patron Don Justino de Neve, canon of Seville Cathedral.
Among the paintings on display are the newly-discovered Penitent Saint Peter, which has never been seen in public before this exhibition, as well as The Baptism of Christ, taken out of Seville Cathedral for the first time since it was hung there by Neve in 1667.
The exhibition will run concurrently with the Wallace Collection’s Murillo: Painting of the Spanish Golden Age exhibition, of eight Murillo paintings that are part of the gallery’s collection, along with paintings by his workshop and contemporaries.
Murillo & Justino de Neve at the Dulwich Picture Gallery runs from 6 Feb to 19 May 2013, and Murillo at the Wallace Collection runs from 6 Feb to 12 May 2013.
