Event: The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk
Location: Barbican Art Gallery, EC2
A major retrospective at the Barbican Art Gallery celebrates The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier.
Gaultier has worked in the fashion industry for nearly 40 years and the Barbican exhibition is showing the full range from his witty and theatrical design house, from his classic Breton stripes to Madonna’s conical bra worn on her 1990 ‘Blonde Ambition’ tour.
Gaultier describes it as “an adventure of a show” and, as you might expect from fashion’s counter-culture king, it is all theatre, from the eclectic clothing collections to the moving catwalk, his Spitting Image puppet and clips from the designer’s late night 1990s show Eurotrash.
Gaultier started his own ready-to-wear label in 1976 and the clothes on display exhibit his fascination with experimenting over the years, with influences from punk to nautical.
The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is on at the Barbican Art Gallery until 25th August 2014, open daily, Saturday to Wednesday from 10am to 6pm and Thursday & Friday from 10am to 9pm. Tickets are for timed admission, or book a private view after opening hours.
