Mayfair and St James’s art world has had new arrivals and movement in the last few months with antiquities galleries opening in the area.
Kallos Gallery is one of the big new players in the antiquities market, opening in May in Davies Street. Specialising in Greek antiquities the gallery is a new venture of Swiss collector Baron Thyssen, whose father’s superb collection of Old Masters and modern art is now housed in Madrid. – Kallos Gallery, 14-16 Davies Street, W1.
Daniel Katz Gallery has moved to grand new premises on Hill Street, just off Berkeley Square. The new gallery in an Edwardian town house, where Katz’s wide art interests are reflected in the art on display – Old Masters alongside Egyptian antiquities, Renaissance bronzes and marble sculptures and 20th century painting. On the second floor space is taken up by New York’s Ariadne Galleries, an antiquities dealer in Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Eurasian, Byzantine and mediaeval art.
