Event: Great Britain by Richard Bean
Location: National Theatre, SE1 / Theatre Royal Haymarket, SW1
The National Theatre is staging a new play about the press, politics, the police and phone hacking, in the wake of the News of the World phone hacking trial, directed by Nicholas Hynter, the theatre’s artistic director.
Great Britain by One Man, Two Guv’nors playwright Richard Bean, stars Billie Piper as a tabloid news editor at one of Britain’s bestselling newspapers.
The play, which opened without notice or previews, was rehearsed in secret during the recent phone hacking case, and announced soon after the verdicts were decided.
In the satire about the state of Britain’s media the ambitious Paige Britain (Piper) is a ruthless news editor on the tabloid Free Press, who masterminds a phone hacking campaign to further her own career and her paper’s sales.
The play Great Britain is running on the Lyttelton Stage at the National Theatre until 23rd August, and then transfers to the West End, playing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from 10th September to 10th January 2015.
