Trooping The Colour

A British bastion

It’s difficult to get much more British than Trooping the Colour. Also known as The Queen’s Birthday Parade, there are so many flags waving it’s impossible to think of it without automatically playing patriotic tunes in one’s head. The Royal Family takes centre stage for this ceremonial display by the operational troops of the Household Division at Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall. Over 1,400 officers and men are on parade, together with 200 horses; over 400 musicians from ten bands and corps of drums march and play as one. After the ceremony proper, there’s a fly-past at 1pm by the Royal Air Force - watched by Her Majesty and other members of the Royal Family from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
