BBC Proms

London in harmony

There’s music in the air as The Proms returns to the Royal Albert Hall for six weeks of stirring performances. Every summer, top London orchestras, world-class soloists and rising stars – as well as the BBC's own orchestras and ensembles – come together to perform at the biggest classical music festival in the world. And this year promises to be extra special as it marks the 150th anniversary of the Royal Albert Hall – opened by Queen Victoria in 1871, and named after her late husband, Prince Albert.

With performances expected from London Symphony Orchestra, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Aurora Orchestra, the stage is set for a truly memorable summer programme.

Since its opening, this extraordinary venue has borne witness to, and played a central part in, seismic cultural and social change. The interests, manners and social mores of the people may have changed, but this beautiful building and what it represents remains the same a century-and-a-half later: a meeting place, a reflection of contemporary Britain, and a home for exhilarating live performance and events of international significance.

A little night music

As all great classical music concerts should, the season ends with a spectacular crescendo – the Last Night of the Proms. This famous grand finale is the ultimate celebration of British music, culminating with the traditional trio of patriotic classics – Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory – complete with party hats and waving flags.

Party in the park

The Last Night of the Proms shares the limelight with Proms in the Park – an open-air music concert held at London’s Hyde Park with sister concerts at Glasgow Green, Colwyn Bay and Belfast's Titanic Slipways. Prommers are encouraged to join in with a four-nation sing-along as the final half of Last Night of the Proms is live streamed via BBC Big Screens.
